Three men have been sentenced to life in prison for the gang rape of a woman who was lured to a forest under the false pretense of meeting a potential husband. The attack occurred in Madhupur upazila, Tangail, Bangladesh, in 2023.
Court Verdict and Sentencing
On Tuesday, a court in Tangail handed down life sentences to Abdur Rahim, 45, Shafiqul Islam Shafi, 47, and Shamsul Haque, 35. The verdict was delivered by the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, which handles cases of violence against women and children.
According to Special Public Prosecutor Md Omrao Khan Dipu, the victim was taken from Jamalpur to the Dokhola forest area on June 22, 2023. The men told her she was being introduced to a prospective groom, but instead, she was gang raped in a vicious attack.
Investigation and Trial
The woman, who has not been named, filed a report at Madhupur Police Station immediately after the attack. Following a thorough investigation and trial, the tribunal found all three men guilty. The case concluded more than three years after the incident, bringing a measure of justice to the victim.
The court heard that the promise of a marriage meeting was used to lure the woman from Jamalpur before the assault. The convicted men will now serve life sentences for their involvement in the attack.
