A devastating accident has claimed the life of a 23-year-old man who fell five floors from his London flat after a communal landing railing collapsed while he was checking for a pizza delivery. Joshua Robbins, originally from Claudy in Northern Ireland, died instantly from the impact after plunging from Thurston Dwellings on Newton Street last Thursday evening.
Family's Heartbreak and Call for Answers
Joshua's parents, Fifi Garrett and Will Robbins, have issued an emotional joint statement expressing their absolute devastation and demanding thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding their son's death. Will Robbins witnessed the immediate aftermath of the fall, an experience described as deeply traumatic for any parent to endure.
The family emphasized that Joshua was not behaving recklessly at the time of the incident. "This is not an allegation or speculation. The railing gave way. Our son did not climb it or behave recklessly. A safety barrier that was meant to prevent a fall gave way, with catastrophic consequences," they stated.
Safety Concerns and Structural Questions
Photographs from the scene reveal the fifth-floor balcony missing its guard rail, with temporary wooden boarding now erected to prevent further accidents. The incident has raised serious questions about structural safety in residential buildings, particularly as it occurred within Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's constituency.
The Katie Trust, a charity supporting families affected by sudden deaths, has expressed profound concern about the incident. "He had a smile that lit up every room and was widely described as kind, funny, and full of charisma, with impeccable manners and an ease with people that made him instantly likeable," they said.

A former teacher from St Colmcille's Primary School expressed sorrow at the news and shared fond memories of Joshua from his school days.

In an emotional video posted to social media, Fifi Garrett, who works as Political and Stakeholder Engagement Manager for The Katie Trust, described the unbearable decisions facing bereaved parents. "No-one should have to make these decisions. No-one with a child should be dealing with pathologists on their behalf," she said, adding: "His name was Josh Robbins, and he was valuable and he deserved better."
