A mother has launched a campaign for safer high-rise buildings after her 23-year-old son fell to his death from a fifth-floor balcony in London. Joshua Robbins died on 29 January when the railing of a communal balcony allegedly gave way as he leaned over to check for a pizza delivery.
Fiona Garrett, 46, from County Londonderry, has called on landlords to inspect railings immediately. She described her son as 'gentle, kind, and quietly thoughtful', and said the family is planning legal action. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has responded to her letter, promising to 'do all we can to help you get answers'.
The incident occurred at Thurston Dwellings in Holborn, managed by Islington and Shoreditch Housing Association (ISHA). Chief executive Pippa Fleetwood-Read expressed condolences but declined further comment, citing the ongoing police investigation.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed officers attended the scene at 20:19 GMT, and the man was pronounced dead despite paramedics' efforts. No arrests have been made. A fundraiser has been set up to support the family’s legal costs.
Ms Garrett urged residents to contact landlords to check balcony safety, warning against a 'buck-passing' scenario similar to the Grenfell Tower tragedy. An inquest date has not been set.
