Lee Jones, 38, has been charged with one count of wounding with intent and one count of possession of an offensive weapon in a public place after armed police were called to a residential street in Westerhope, Newcastle.
Police response and injuries
Police were called to reports of a disturbance in the Pilton Road area of Westerhope at about 10.30pm on Monday. Emergency services attended and found a woman in her 50s with injuries consistent with assault. She was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries and has since been discharged.
A man in his 30s was arrested and remains in police custody. Northumbria Police said it is believed those involved were known to each other.
Resident accounts
Residents told ChronicleLive that a police presence remained on the scene until around midday on Tuesday, with vehicles parked around Brockwell Grove, Pilton Road and Rapperton Court. One resident, speaking anonymously, said they first noticed a police van on the street at around 10.30pm on Monday, and reported several police vehicles and officers putting a white sheet on the ground.
The resident said: "There's a lot of stuff goes on, it's just one of those streets, but I haven't seen this type of police presence in forever. We have had them before but not like this, it is worrying. I asked the police if I had anything to worry about and they said no, but obviously they're not going to tell us anything."
Court appearance
Lee Jones, of Pilton Road, Westerhope, is due to appear before Newcastle Magistrates' Court today.
