Some of Britain's most notorious female prisoners, including convicted child killer Lucy Letby, are reportedly set for a 'cosy Christmas' behind bars this year. Inmates at the high-security HMP Bronzefield in Surrey will enjoy festive workshops, treats, and charity-funded gifts, despite their appalling crimes.
Festive Privileges for Notorious Inmates
Lucy Letby, 35, who is serving a whole-life term for murdering seven babies and attempting to kill eight others, is housed on the jail's enhanced Unit 4. She is joined by other high-profile prisoners such as Beinash Batool, 31, jailed for 33 years for murdering ten-year-old Sara Sharif, and aristocrat Constance Marten, 38, sentenced to 14 years for the manslaughter of her newborn.
Letby was moved straight to the enhanced unit after her induction, granting her privileges including extra spending money for sweets, more time out of her cell, weekly visits, and a cleaning job. About a quarter of the prison's population enjoys such enhanced status, but sources indicate the regime becomes even more indulgent over the festive period.
A Cushy Christmas Calendar
According to insiders, the Christmas schedule at the private prison includes activities that would outrage victims' families. Inmates will take part in an opera singing workshop where mince pies and chocolate are served.
Prisoners will be given free Christmas cards to send home and will make decorations to brighten their cells under a 'Jailbirds' scheme linked to the charity Barnardo's. Another charity, PACT, will provide presents worth up to £20 each for inmates to gift to their families.
The December itinerary also includes movie afternoons and quizzes, while chaplains will deliver festive chocolate treats to every wing. A full Christmas Day feast is planned, featuring halal turkey and chicken with all the trimmings, followed by pudding or Yule log and ice cream. Burgers and hot dogs will be served on Boxing Day.
Daily Life and Disturbing Friendships
Letby, who has complained about her life 'wasting away' awaiting a possible retrial, is constantly escorted by prison officers for her own protection and to prevent her from harming others. Fellow inmates have described her as 'really weird', but note she has struck up a disturbing friendship with fellow child-killer Beinash Batool.
An insider told The Sun: 'If people think prison is about punishment, that does not look the case at Bronzefield over Christmas. Most people, especially victims' families, would be outraged at what is being laid on.'
A spokesman for Bronzefield Prison stated that prisoners have access to a range of activities throughout the year, including Christmas, and confirmed a traditional festive meal would be offered as is the case annually. The Ministry of Justice has been approached for comment.
