A man from Liverpool serving a prison sentence has died. Joseph Peacock, a prisoner at Wymott Prison, died at the Royal Preston Hospital on July 25 this year.
The 44-year-old, born in Liverpool, worked as a carer before being jailed at the prison, near Leyland in Lancashire. An inquest into his death was opened and adjourned at Preston Coroners' Court on Thursday, September 24.
Ombudsman review required
Area Coroner Kate Bisset said during the brief hearing: "As this man died whilst in custody it requires a review by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman therefore an inquest cannot take place until that investigation has concluded."
The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman investigates all deaths in custody to determine whether the individual received the same care in prison as they would expect in the community.
Next steps
The case will be mentioned in court at a further date, with a date for a final inquest to be scheduled.
