A major investigation is underway at HMP Exeter after a 28-year-old inmate was charged with the murder of a fellow prisoner.
The accused, whose identity remains protected for legal reasons, appeared before Exeter Magistrates' Court on Tuesday morning following the tragic incident within the prison walls.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the murder charge stems from an altercation between two inmates at the category B adult male facility. The victim, whose family has been notified, was pronounced dead at the scene despite immediate medical intervention.
Prison Safety Under Scrutiny
This incident has raised serious questions about safety and violence within the UK's prison system. HMP Exeter, which houses approximately 550 inmates, has faced previous criticism regarding conditions and staffing levels.
