HMRC has filed a petition seeking to have Jamie Carragher declared bankrupt over an unpaid tax bill. The former Liverpool and England full-back, 48, had a case filed against him by solicitors representing HMRC at the High Court in London on August 26, according to City AM.
HMRC's approach to tax debts
A spokesperson told the outlet that HMRC does not comment on individual cases. But they added: “We take a supportive approach to dealing with customers who have tax debts and do everything we can to help those who engage with us to get out of debt, such as offering instalment plans. We only petition for bankruptcy as a last resort.”
Carragher's career and media work
Carragher, who made his name at Liverpool, is now a regular on Sky Sports, co-hosting its Monday Night Football programme. He also works for CBS on their Champions League coverage. The Liverpool icon was on TV screens on Monday evening, discussing Premier League action from the opening weekend and providing punditry for Chelsea's trip to Craven Cottage to face Fulham. He also makes regular appearances on the Stick To Football podcast and YouTube show, part of Gary Neville’s The Overlap media business.
Carragher made more than 500 senior appearances for Liverpool between 1996 and 2013, and earned 38 caps for England during his career. During his time at Anfield, he won the FA Cup twice, the League Cup three times and the Champions League once. He was also part of Liverpool squads for victories in the UEFA Cup, Super Cup and Community Shield. He retired from playing in 2013 before moving into punditry, where he remains a regular fixture.
