A petrol station in Cairo has been swallowed by a massive sinkhole, with surveillance footage capturing the moment the ground gave way. The incident occurred on Monday, 2 February, when a 15-metre-deep crater suddenly opened beneath the station, which had customers inside at the time.
Shocked witnesses were seen running to the edge of the hole to look inside, while others fled the scene. Local media reported that two people were injured and taken to a nearby hospital, where they are now in a stable condition.
Initial investigations suggest that the collapse may have been triggered by excavation work at a nearby construction site, which destabilised the ground. Further investigations are underway to determine the exact cause.
This is the second sinkhole incident in Cairo in less than two months, raising concerns about ground stability in the area.
