Zara McDermott has described a 'really, really scary' incident in Thailand where she and her crew nearly faced arrest while filming for a new BBC documentary. The former Love Island star was in Bangkok's red light district for the three-part series 'Thailand: The Dark Side of Paradise', which examines why thousands of young Britons visit the country each year.
Despite obtaining permission in advance, McDermott said tensions escalated with local police as bar owners pressured them to leave. 'We nearly got arrested because of the filming that we were doing,' she told MailOnline. 'The bar owners were definitely trying to throw their weight around a bit, and wanted us to get out of the area completely.'
The crew was filming women in underwear along streets and doorways when they were ordered to stop. According to The Sun, a crew member had an ashtray thrown at their head before they were escorted out. The confrontation, including the thrown ashtray, will be shown in the documentary's first episode on September 8.
McDermott, who has also fronted BBC documentaries on Ibiza, revenge porn, rape culture, and disordered eating, recently went public with her relationship with singer Louis Tomlinson. The couple reportedly moved in together at his North London mansion in August, just months after confirming their romance in June.
