A man has been charged with murder after a woman who was stabbed in the neck in Birmingham city centre died from her injuries. Katie Fox, 34, was attacked outside the entrance to Birmingham New Street station shortly before 9pm on Friday, 7 November. She was taken to hospital in a critical condition but later died.
Djeison Rafael, 21, was initially charged with attempted murder and appeared at Birmingham magistrates court on Monday. Following Fox's death, police applied to change the charge to murder. Rafael also faces two counts of actual bodily harm, possession of a Stanley knife, and assaulting an emergency worker.
West Midlands police said extra officers will be in Birmingham city centre to offer reassurance. They are appealing for witnesses to the attack on Smallbrook Queensway, a busy road adjacent to the station. Police believe Rafael was wearing an all-grey tracksuit, black hat, trainers, and a rucksack on the evening of the attack.
Detective Inspector James Nix described the attack as unprovoked. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood thanked police for their swift action and urged witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact West Midlands police on 101, quoting log 5503 of 7 November.
