Merseyside Police are investigating after a woman's body was discovered in a black bin bag in a Liverpool park, yards from two Premier League stadiums. The body is believed to have been there for several weeks, and detectives have so far been unable to identify the woman or a suspect.
Discovery in Stanley Park
A passerby contacted police at 5.25pm on Friday, August 28, after spotting a suspicious black bin bag in bushes in the walled garden of Stanley Park. Officers attended and found the woman's body.
The 110-acre Grade-II listed Victorian park, which features ornate bridges, a bandstand, and a conservatory, sits directly between Liverpool FC's Anfield stadium and Everton's Goodison Park, now used by Everton Women's Team.
Investigation ongoing
A post-mortem has been carried out, but police are withholding the cause of death for "investigative reasons." DNA testing and dental records have so far failed to identify the woman.
Senior Investigating Officer Det Ch Insp John Fitzgerald said: "Our investigation remains ongoing, and we remain determined to identify the woman and find the person or persons responsible for her murder."
He added: "We are actively pursuing every call we receive to ensure that people are seen to be safe and well and can be eliminated from our enquiries."
Appeal for information
Merseyside Police said they have been "working round-the-clock to speak to potential witnesses and gather CCTV and forensic evidence." Officers have spoken to occupants of 625 properties surrounding the park and recovered CCTV from 30 private and commercial cameras in the area.
The force has received 160 reports from the public and eliminated 73 people from enquiries. They are appealing for anyone who has been in the area of Stanley Park recently or who may have flown a drone over the park to check their footage.
The woman is described as white, believed to be around 70 years old, approximately 5ft 2in tall, of slight build, with strawberry blonde hair. She was found wearing a pink Nike T-shirt.
