Woman Gives Birth in Handcuffs in NYC Courtroom

A 33-year-old woman, Samantha Randazzo, was allegedly forced to give birth while handcuffed in a Brooklyn courthouse on Friday, after being held in custody for more than 24 hours. Legal aid groups reported that Randazzo was left traumatized and humiliated, delivering her child without adequate medical care, privacy, or dignity, surrounded by law enforcement and court staff.

Randazzo had been arrested on Thursday on charges of drug possession and trespassing. She was brought to court for arraignment after being discharged from a hospital despite being nine months pregnant. Public defenders and legal advocates are now demanding an investigation into the incident, describing it as a profound moral failure of the carceral system.

However, Randazzo's lawyer, Wynton Sharpe, disputed some of the claims, stating that court officers reacted quickly and the presiding judge cleared the room immediately upon realizing the situation. The case has reignited debates about the treatment of pregnant individuals in custody.
