A 23-year-old woman has died in Japan after a man fell from a 12-storey block of flats and landed on her. The man survived the fall, police said.

Emergency services were called to a report that 'a man fell and hit a woman' in Naka-ku, Nagoya City at around 1am on July 19. The victim was identified as Tomohiro Inaba, a shop assistant working nearby. She was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead several hours later from haemorrhagic shock.
The man, Nobushige Taguchi, 29, also a shop worker, fell and landed on top of her as she walked on a path under the window. He survived but is fighting for his life in hospital with severe head and chest injuries and is in a coma.
Investigation underway
The incident occurred about 500 metres northeast of Yabamachi Station on the Nagoya Municipal Subway Meijo Line, in an area densely populated with high-rise buildings and apartments, according to Kyodo News. The person who alerted police was a friend of the victim who was walking alongside her but suffered no injuries. Other people rushed to the scene after hearing screams.
Police are investigating how the man came to fall, looking into whether he jumped or if it was an accident. The area was cordoned off as forensic officers gathered evidence. It is unclear from which floor of the apartment block the man fell. Local media reported the man was not a resident of the block, so the investigation will also examine why he was there.
