A tragic incident occurred at a Florida beach toll booth when a pickup truck crashed into the station, resulting in the death of the attendant. The driver was subsequently detained under a mental health crisis law.
Details of the Incident
The crash happened around 12:40 p.m. Monday at the Dunlawton beach access ramp in Daytona Beach Shores. The victim, Tammy Jo Baker, 63, was a longtime toll booth attendant. According to witnesses, the pickup truck, driven by Deanna Harrell, 36, slammed into the booth before continuing into the ocean. Harrell reportedly attempted to drive away but was stopped by bystanders.
Driver Detained and Investigated
Law enforcement officials detained Harrell under Florida's Baker Act, which allows for the temporary detention of individuals experiencing a mental health crisis. The Volusia County Sheriff's Office noted a strong odor of alcohol on the driver, and she is being tested for alcohol intoxication. Sheriff Mike Chitwood stated that Baker likely died on impact due to the fragile construction of the toll booth.
The beach access ramp remains closed as authorities investigate the crash. The community mourns the loss of a dedicated employee who had served at the booth for many years.
