A woman has been formally charged with murder after the tragic death of a two-year-old boy at a residential address in East London.

The Metropolitan Police were called to the property on Wellington Road, Chadwell Heath, at approximately 15:15 BST on Tuesday following concerns for the welfare of a child.

Despite the efforts of emergency services, the young boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accused, 41-year-old Kula Mayende, appeared at Thames Magistrates' Court on Thursday, 19th September. She has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at the Old Bailey on Friday.

Detective Chief Inspector Kate Kieran, from the Met's Specialist Crime Command, is leading the investigation. She stated: "This is an incredibly sad incident, and my thoughts are with everyone affected by this little boy's death."

DCI Kieran continued: "A dedicated team of officers is working to establish the full circumstances. We are supporting the child's family as they come to terms with their devastating loss."

The police have confirmed that they are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident. A post-mortem examination is due to be held to establish the cause of the toddler's death.
