Tragic Kayaking Incident Claims Young Woman's Life
A 20-year-old woman has died following a kayaking accident on the River Tees in Barnard Castle on Saturday afternoon. Emergency services launched a major rescue operation after the kayaker was reported to be in difficulty.

Durham Police were alerted to concerns for the woman's safety just before 2pm. A significant multi-agency search was immediately initiated, involving the County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, North East Ambulance Service, and the Great North Air Ambulance Service. The Coastguard, along with the Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team, also joined the operation.
Despite the extensive efforts of all emergency personnel, the outcome was devastating. The woman's body was recovered from the water near Barnard Castle at approximately 4pm, bringing the intense two-hour search to a tragic conclusion.
