A British man has died and 27 others have been injured after a bus carrying tourists veered into a ravine on the Canary Island of La Gomera, local officials have confirmed. The incident occurred at around 1.15pm local time on Friday when the vehicle left the GM-2 highway near San Sebastián de La Gomera.
The bus was transporting a group of British tourists for a boat excursion. Emergency services attended to 28 occupants, including the driver. Three of the injured are in critical condition and were taken to Hospital Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, with the most seriously injured transferred to Tenerife.
Fernando Clavijo, president of the Canary Islands, expressed his support for the victims and their families. The British embassy in Madrid said it was ready to support British nationals and was in contact with local authorities. UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper also offered condolences.
Spanish police have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, which has not yet been established. The same road was the site of a fatal accident last year that killed one woman and injured 10 people.
