A man has been shot dead by police in Whitehall after allegedly producing two knives when challenged by officers. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the incident is not being treated as terrorism.
The shooting occurred at approximately 11:27 pm on Sunday in Great Scotland Yard, near Trafalgar Square. Officers from both the Metropolitan Police and City of London Police were involved. The man was first hit with a stun gun before being fatally shot by a firearms officer, as he was deemed to still pose a threat.
Despite attempts to save his life, the man was declared dead at the scene. No police officers or members of the public were injured. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched a mandatory investigation into the shooting.
The IOPC stated that the incident involved officers from both forces and that their thoughts are with all affected. The officers involved will provide full accounts within 48 hours. The investigation will also examine the man's health records to understand why he may have been carrying knives.
