Ex-Tory Councillor Who Drugged and Raped Wife Admits Making Child Abuse Images

Philip Young, a former Conservative councillor who previously admitted nearly 50 offences of drugging, raping and sexually assaulting his former wife, has now pleaded guilty to additional charges of making indecent images of children.

Young, 49, appeared via video link at Winchester Crown Court on Friday and changed his pleas to guilty on three counts of making indecent images of children, one count of possessing a prohibited image of a child, and four counts of possessing an extreme pornographic image. He had initially denied these charges in July 2024.

In January, Young pleaded guilty to 11 counts of rape and 11 counts of administering a substance with intent to stupefy his former wife, Joanne Young, 48, who has waived her right to anonymity. He also admitted 14 counts of voyeurism, including a single count covering at least 200 acts; seven counts of assault by penetration; four counts of sexual assault; and one count of publishing obscene articles on at least 500 occasions. All offences occurred between 2010 and 2024.

Young, who lived in Enfield, north London, was a Conservative councillor on Swindon Borough Council from 2007 to 2010. He resigned as cabinet member for culture, regeneration and economic development in May 2010, citing a desire to devote more time to his family and run his own business.

Separately, Dean Hamilton, 47, of Somerset, pleaded guilty in February to raping Joanne Young. Four other men have appeared in court charged with sexual offences against her, with some pleading not guilty.
