Two police officers were shot and killed in Tremonton, Utah, on Sunday night while responding to a domestic disturbance call, authorities confirmed on Monday. A sheriff’s deputy and a police dog were also wounded in the incident.
According to police, multiple 911 hang-up calls were received from a home in the city. The first officer to arrive was speaking to someone at the residence when a man emerged with a gun and opened fire, killing the officer. A second officer who responded was also fatally shot by the same suspect.
Bystanders persuaded the suspect to drop his weapon before tactical teams arrived to secure the scene. The man was arrested on charges of aggravated murder. The names of the officers and the suspect have not yet been released.
The injured deputy was released from hospital on Monday, while the police dog remains in fair condition. Police Chief Cade Reyes of neighbouring Brigham City praised the fallen officers as heroes. Tremonton, located about 75 miles north of Salt Lake City, has a population of approximately 10,000.
