The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has issued an updated travel advisory for British travellers in France as wildfires continue to force mass evacuations. More than 250,000 people have been driven from their homes in southwestern France, with blazes affecting the Gironde and Landes regions.
Overnight Evacuations and Fire Spread
Around 55,000 additional people were evacuated overnight in southwest France, bringing the total in the Gironde region—home to the city of Bordeaux—to 220,000. Gusting winds have fanned the flames, accelerating the spread. A second fire in the Landes region has forced 30,000 people to evacuate this week, pushing the overall total beyond 250,000.
Official Statements
Interior minister Laurent Nunez described a 'difficult' night for fire crews, stating that 'the situation remains very unfavourable.' He posted on X: “The fire again became extremely virulent again and unpredictable, generating its own winds and advancing erratically toward the Bordeaux metropolitan area. It became calmer by the end of the night.”
Foreign Office Guidance
The FCDO advisory states: “Wildfires are affecting parts of Gironde and Landes in the south-west of France. French authorities have evacuated campsites, tourist accommodation and some residential areas. Access to affected areas may be restricted and roads may close at short notice. Further evacuations may take place.” Travellers in the affected area or planning to travel are urged to follow instructions and updates from local authorities and emergency services at all times, call 112 if they need emergency help, and check with their accommodation or travel provider before travelling. A public information line is open from 09:00 to 17:00 at +33 (0)9 70 80 90 40 (select option 1 for Gironde, option 2 for Landes).
Wildfires in Spain
In neighbouring Spain, authorities have overseen new evacuations due to wildfires in the Valencia region and fires west of Madrid. Uncontrolled blazes have forced 116,000 people out of their homes this week.
