A University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) footballer is facing attempted murder charges after allegedly stabbing two teammates on Saturday morning, just hours before the team’s match against South Florida.
The university confirmed in a statement that both victims are in stable condition and the suspect, also a player, is in custody. “UAB’s top priority remains the safety and well-being of all of our students,” the statement said. Names of those involved have not been released due to patient privacy and the ongoing investigation.
AL.com reported the suspect is charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder. The incident occurred at the Football Operations Building. The team decided to proceed with the afternoon Senior Day fixture at Protective Stadium in Birmingham.
Interim head coach Alex Mortensen stated a small number of players chose not to play following the altercation. UAB ultimately lost the match 48-18 to South Florida.
