Two five-year-olds critical after A59 horror crash

Two five-year-old children are among three people fighting for their lives following a horrific crash on the A59 in Lancashire. The road was closed for six hours after a massive emergency response descended on the scene at Gisburn. A woman in her 60s, a boy, and a girl, both aged five, sustained severe injuries in the collision. All three were rushed to hospital, where they remain in a critical condition.

Emergency response

Lancashire Live reported that three air ambulances landed in a nearby field close to the collision site, while three fire engines, nine ambulance vehicles, and 12 police vehicles were also in attendance. The A59 was shut between the junction of Hellifield Road and the junction with Yarlside Lane to facilitate collision investigation work, with motorists urged to avoid the area.

Details of the crash

The smash, involving a Skoda Karoq and a Volkswagen Golf R, happened shortly before 4pm on Thursday (May 21), near the junction with Strawberry Fields. Lancashire Police confirmed the driver of the VW Golf, a man in his 20s, was also hospitalised with serious injuries. No arrests have been made, and the road has since fully reopened.

Police appeal

Police are now appealing for witnesses, urging anybody with footage or information to come forward. Sergeant Anthony Beckett of the Roads Policing Unit said: 'First and foremost my thoughts are with the four people who suffered very serious injuries in this collision as they receive treatment and care in hospital. This was an horrendous collision involving two cars and involved a huge response from the emergency services. As we investigate the collision, we are appealing for any witnesses to come forward and for anyone who has dashcam footage to contact us. You might have dashcam footage which does not show the collision but captures either of the cars involved shortly before it happened. Any information or footage which can help us, please get in touch. The A59 at Gisburn was closed for several hours while the injured people received treatment at the scene and for collision investigation work to be carried out.'
