A devastating crash on the A1 in Northumberland has resulted in two fatalities and three serious injuries. Northumbria Police received reports of a two-vehicle collision shortly before 4am on Saturday at the junction for Wandylaw, north of Alnwick.
Details of the collision
According to police, a silver Nissan Juke traveling southbound collided with a blue Vauxhall Corsa heading north for reasons yet to be determined. Emergency services attended the scene, where the drivers – a woman in her 50s from the Juke and a man in his 40s from the Corsa – were pronounced dead.
Two passengers in the Juke, a woman in her 20s and a secondary-school-aged boy, along with a female passenger in her 20s from the Corsa, were taken to hospital with serious injuries and remain in care. The next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers.
Road closure and investigation
A section of the A1 between Ellingham and Purdy Lodge was closed in both directions for approximately ten hours but has since reopened. Officers from the Roads Policing Unit are appealing for witnesses, particularly those with CCTV or dashcam footage of the moments leading up to the crash.
Sergeant Alex Partington of Northumbria Police said: "This is a devastating incident where two people have tragically lost their lives while three others remain in a serious condition. I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of all affected at this incredibly difficult time, and we will continue to support them in any way we can."
He added: "Our investigation to establish the exact circumstances leading to this collision is now under way, and we are already conducting a range of enquiries. We are now appealing to any motorists or witnesses who were travelling in the area at this time to come forward."
