Two British cross-country horse riders have been killed in separate accidents just hours apart, eventing authorities have announced. Sophie Fouracre, 34, and Kerry Donoghue, 42, both died following incidents at separate equestrian competitions on Saturday, July 18, 2026.
Details of the Accidents
Ms Fouracre suffered fatal injuries while riding Rhubarbsfox Brittania at Swalcliffe Park in Oxfordshire. Hours later, Ms Donoghue died in an accident while riding Carneyhaugh Rua at Penrith in Cumbria. Despite an immediate medical response, neither rider could be saved. Both horses were examined by veterinary teams and found to be uninjured.
British Eventing Statement
British Eventing confirmed the news in a statement, with the sport's community "heartbroken" over the devastating double loss. The body added that "comprehensive" reviews into both accidents will now take place. Rosie Williams, Chief Executive of British Eventing, said: “The British Eventing community is heartbroken. On behalf of everyone at British Eventing, I want to extend our deepest condolences to Kerry and Sophie's families, friends and loved ones at this devastating time.”

They also asked that the privacy of both families be respected. “We are immensely grateful to the organisers, doctors, paramedics, veterinary teams, officials and emergency services at both events for the professionalism, compassion and care they showed in the most difficult of circumstances,” Ms Williams added.
