A 23-year-old transgender woman has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of her 71-year-old neighbour in a shocking Edinburgh attack that has rocked the local community.
Ciara Watkin must serve at least 20 years behind bars after admitting to killing Brenda Blainey in what prosecutors described as a "sustained and vicious" assault at the victim's home in the Niddrie Mains area last November.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard how Watkin subjected Ms Blainey to a prolonged attack involving multiple weapons, leaving the pensioner with catastrophic injuries. Forensic evidence presented to the court painted a harrowing picture of the violence that unfolded within the walls of the residential property.
Judge Lord Scott told Watkin: "You have pled guilty to the murder of Brenda Blainey, a lady of 71 years of age, in her own home where she was entitled to feel safe and secure."
