Far-right activist Tommy Robinson will not face charges over an alleged assault at St Pancras station, British Transport Police and the Crown Prosecution Service have announced. Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm after the incident on 28 July.
The alleged victim, a 64-year-old man, refused to provide a statement to detectives, the force said. Police presented the prosecution file to the CPS, which concluded there was not a realistic prospect of conviction. It is understood that clear CCTV images showed the man following Robinson for at least 20 seconds before the punch was thrown.
Robinson was backing away, it is understood, when the man was punched and left motionless on the ground. Video posted on social media after the incident showed Robinson appearing to claim he acted in self-defence. The injured man was taken to hospital where he spent two days with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
Robinson, a former leader of the English Defence League, was arrested at Luton Airport on 4 August upon returning from Portugal. The CPS confirmed that after a careful review of the evidence, the legal test for prosecution had not been met. The alleged victim has a right to appeal the decision but has not assisted detectives.
