A five-year-old boy has suffered horrific facial injuries after being attacked by a dog while playing in a park in Mexborough, Sheffield. The incident occurred on Schofield Street, where the child was approached by a bull breed dog that then attacked his face, causing injuries to his eye, ears, and cheeks.
Police were called to the scene and arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion of owning a dog dangerously out of control. He has since been released on bail, and the animal has been placed in police kennels pending further investigation.
The boy was taken to hospital for treatment, and authorities believe the injuries may result in lasting physical scars. South Yorkshire Police described the attack as 'every parent’s nightmare,' emphasising that it could have been prevented through responsible dog ownership.
Inspector Steve Usher urged dog owners to keep their pets on leads in areas where children are present, stating, 'Any dog has the potential to cause injury.' The police continue to investigate the incident.
