A three-year-old girl from south Wales has died after drowning in a pool while on holiday with her family, an inquest opening has heard.
Incident Details
Gwent Coroners' Court heard on Monday that Eleri Nicola Ellesmere, three, of Elliotstown, New Tredegar, died on June 26 after being found unresponsive in the pool at a holiday villa. Eleri was staying at Villa Francisca Mallorca on a family holiday in Palma de Mallorca at the time of her death.
Paramedics attended the villa on June 24 and administered CPR before conveying the toddler to Son Espases Hospital in Palma for further treatment, where she died two days later. Doctor Ana Maria Rieracladera gave a provisional cause of death as mechanical asphyxiation by drowning and respiratory failure.
Family Tribute
Her family has described being "heartbroken" at the loss. A tribute from her family states: "Eleri was deeply loved and her loss has left an unimaginable emptiness in all of our lives. No family should ever have to endure such pain, and yet we are now facing the most devastating chapter a mother, father and surrounding family can experience."
Fundraising and Inquest
A GoFundMe has raised almost £8,000 which will go towards Eleri's funeral. The family added: "We want to surround them with love, support, and care in every way possible. The funds raised will help ensure that beautiful Eleri is given the funeral she truly deserves- a farewell filled with dignity, love, and respect."
Coroner Rose Farmer told the court that an inquest has opened into the child's death as she died as a result of drowning. The inquest will resume on April 13, 2027.
