Toddler burned after firework bounces near petrol station

Police in Northern Ireland are appealing for information after a two-year-old girl was injured by a firework outside a petrol station in Carrickmore.

Local policing Inspector McDonagh said officers received a report that a group of young people were throwing fireworks outside a petrol station in the Main Street area of the village at around 8.30pm on Saturday 31st October.

One firework thrown into the road partially exploded, then bounced back and exploded a second time beside a child who was in the area with her parents, the inspector said. The girl sustained a burn to her forearm, which required hospital treatment.

Reckless act near petrol station

Inspector McDonagh said the child was aged under two and that "it's only by sheer luck that the consequences of this reckless act weren't even more serious." He described the irresponsibility of throwing fireworks near a petrol station as shocking.

Four young men, aged in their mid-teens and wearing dark-coloured tracksuits, were involved, according to the inspector.
