A teenage gunman opened fire in New York's Times Square early on Saturday, injuring three people, including a tourist. The incident occurred at around 1:20 am near the intersection of West 44th Street and Seventh Avenue, a bustling area popular with visitors.
According to the New York Police Department, a 17-year-old male suspect was arrested at the scene. Police said the shooting stemmed from a verbal dispute that escalated. The suspect fired three shots, striking a 19-year-old man in the right foot, a 65-year-old man in the left leg, and an 18-year-old female tourist who was in an Uber with her parents. The tourist suffered a graze wound to the neck.
All three victims were taken to Bellevue Hospital and are in stable condition. Police recovered a firearm at the scene. The suspect has not yet been charged. The dispute reportedly began inside a Raising Cane's restaurant on Broadway before moving outside, where the shooter pursued a CitiBike rider.
The tourist's mother, who asked to remain anonymous, described the experience as 'horrific,' noting that the family had chosen to visit Times Square at night for a beautiful view of the city. The shooting occurred just days after New York's police commissioner announced that the city had recorded its lowest number of shooting incidents and victims in years, with 412 incidents and 489 victims in the first seven months of 2025.
Despite overall declines in major crime, the city has seen some shocking incidents this summer, including a mass shooting in a Midtown Manhattan office building in July that left four dead, including the gunman and a police officer.
