Police in Texas engaged in a spirited pursuit of an escaped kangaroo that bolted from the Waco Wildlife Rescue, with the entire incident captured on video and shared by authorities earlier this week.
Chase and Capture
The Waco Police Department released footage on Tuesday, 26 May, showing officers chasing the marsupial through a residential neighborhood. The kangaroo, which had escaped from the local wildlife facility, led officers on a brief but energetic run before being safely restrained.
Officers managed to corner the animal and carefully grabbed it by its tail, a standard method for handling kangaroos, to prevent injury to both the marsupial and themselves. The kangaroo was then transported back to the Waco Wildlife Rescue without any harm.
Second Escape Incident
This escape marks the second time in less than a year that a kangaroo has gotten loose from the same facility. In September of the previous year, two kangaroos made a break for freedom, though both were eventually recaptured. The repeated incidents have raised questions about enclosure security at the wildlife rescue.
Authorities confirmed that no injuries were sustained by the animal or the officers during the pursuit. The kangaroo is now back in its enclosure, and the wildlife rescue is reviewing its protocols to prevent future escapes.
The lighthearted chase drew attention on social media, with many residents finding amusement in the unusual police callout. However, officials reminded the public that escaped animals can pose risks to traffic and themselves, urging vigilance.
