A courageous terrier has defied the odds, surviving nearly two days trapped in thick mud after disappearing during a countryside walk. The beloved dog, Krakka, went missing on April 30 near the village of Shiptonthorpe in East Yorkshire, leaving her owner, Glynis Elgey, distraught.
The Search and Rescue
After Krakka failed to return home, Ms Elgey sought help from Steve Priestman of Drone SAR for Lost Dogs UK, an organisation dedicated to reuniting lost dogs with their owners. Initially, the team attempted to locate Krakka using a drone, but when that proved unsuccessful, they shifted their focus to less obvious areas. It was then that they discovered a patch of nettles and, crucially, heard a faint whimper.
Following the sound, rescuers found Krakka buried in dirt inside a rabbit warren. It is believed she became trapped after a mini-landslide. The team immediately began digging, working tirelessly for 25 minutes to free the struggling pooch.
The Emotional Reunion
Ms Elgey described the moment they spotted Krakka: "All we could see was a paw. We were so thrilled – we thought we would never see her again." Once freed, Krakka immediately showed her gratitude by giving her owner a kiss. "The first thing she did when we got her out was give me a kiss," Ms Elgey added.
A video captured the dramatic rescue, and photos later showed the joyful reunion between Ms Elgey and her shaken but relieved pet.
Rescue Team's Account
A spokesperson for Drone SAR for Lost Dogs UK recounted the operation: "Thankfully, while on the search, a whimper was heard which came from a rabbit hole where it's believed Krakka had gone into. The recovery began by DSAR pilot Steve Priestman, ground searcher Jennifer Zarek, along with Krakka's owners David Hudson and Glynis Elgey. They got to work digging her out, which took around 25 minutes."
Krakka's survival is a testament to her resilience and the dedication of the rescue team. Ms Elgey expressed her relief: "I was so excited when we found her and she was alive."
