Terrier Survives 48 Hours Buried in Mud in Yorkshire

A terrier named Krakka has survived an ordeal of nearly two days trapped in thick mud after going missing during a walk in East Yorkshire. The dog was rescued after a 25-minute dig by a team from Drone SAR for Lost Dogs UK.

Owner Glynis Elgey reported Krakka missing on 30 April near the village of Shiptonthorpe. A friend recommended contacting Steve Priestman, of Drone SAR for Lost Dogs UK, which specialises in reuniting lost dogs with their owners. The team initially used a drone but could not locate the dog, so they shifted focus to a less obvious area.

Covered in nettles, the team heard a whimper and followed the sound to a rabbit warren. They discovered Krakka barely visible, buried in dirt after a suspected mini-landslide. Rescuers plunged their hands into the soil, eventually freeing the terrier after 25 minutes.

Ms Elgey told MailOnline: 'All we could see was a paw. We were so thrilled – we thought we would never see her again.' She added that the first thing Krakka did after being freed was give her a kiss. The dog was reunited with her owner after 48 hours, looking shaken but relieved.

A spokesperson for Drone SAR For Lost Dogs UK said: 'Thankfully while on the search a whimper was heard which came from a rabbit hole where it's believed Krakka had gone into. The recovery began by DSAR pilot Steve Priestman, ground searcher Jennifer Zarek, along with Krakka's owners David Hudson and Glynis Elgey. They got to work digging her out which took around 25 minutes.'
