Loud booms from a controlled explosion at Redcar Bulk Terminal startled residents across an area stretching from Guisborough to Hartlepool on Wednesday evening. The thunderous blast reverberated throughout the region as part of an ongoing project to remove the terminal's unloaders.
Demolition details and timing
The works, which took place at 6pm and 10pm, saw two cranes brought down using explosives. Loud bangs were heard right across Teesside, with one resident commenting: "Heard it in Acklam! My parrots flew into the window in my house from the sound."
Another added: "It rocked the barn over here in Stokesley." A further resident remarked: "Was heard everywhere in Middlesbrough. Should have been warned, thought defo Russia had attacked."
Redevelopment project
The demolition formed part of the multi-million-pound redevelopment works at Redcar Bulk Terminal. Tracy Hall, head of business at the company, said: "As part of the ongoing redevelopment of RBT and in line with planning consent, RBT's two legacy wharf unloaders were safely demolished yesterday at 6pm and 10pm."
Hall added: "Work is now ongoing to clear the scrap steel for recycling. RBT would like to thank the port authority, local authorities and demolition contractors for their support on this project."
