Two teenage boys are in hospital with serious head injuries after their e-bike crashed into a wall during a police chase in Formby. Merseyside Police has made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) following the incident on Church Road on September 30.
Crash at Church Road junction
The boys, aged 15 and 16, came off the e-bike at the junction of Church Road and Davenham Road after colliding with a wall. They were taken to hospital, where they remain in a serious but stable condition.
A Merseyside Police spokesman said officers on patrol saw the two males on an e-bike at around 4.10pm. They failed to stop, and a brief pursuit was carried out. The spokesman confirmed there was no police contact.
Police statement and IOPC referral
Emergency services attended the scene, and both males were taken to hospital with head injuries. The spokesman added that due to the pursuit, a mandatory referral to the IOPC will be made, which is standard practice in such events.
A police cordon was put in place at the scene, and drivers were advised to avoid the area. A road closure remains in place on Church Road at the junction with Davenham Road.
