Mohammed Umar Khan, 15, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 16 years for the murder of 15-year-old Harvey Willgoose at All Saints Catholic High School in Sheffield. The sentence was handed down by Mrs Justice Naomi Ellenbogen on Wednesday, following Khan's conviction in August.
The judge lifted an anonymity order previously protecting Khan's identity, citing the public interest in knowing the identity of those who commit such serious offences. Addressing Khan, the judge rejected claims of self-defence, stating he acted out of 'hurt and anger' over what he perceived as a betrayal of their friendship. Khan showed no emotion or remorse during sentencing.
The attack occurred on 3 February during a lunchbreak. CCTV footage showed Khan pushing Harvey before producing a 13cm hunting knife and stabbing him twice in the chest, with one blow penetrating the heart. Witnesses ran away in fear and panic, with some locking themselves in a cupboard.
The court heard that Khan and Harvey were part of conflicting friendship groups, and an argument escalated over a school lockdown triggered by Khan reporting another student had a knife. Khan's phone contained images of him posing with knives, and he had searched for weaponry online before the attack. His defence argued he had been bullied and 'snapped', but the judge stated this did not mitigate his actions.
Harvey's family, including his sister Sophie, described him as 'warm, funny and caring' and said the pain will remain with them for life. Since his death, they have campaigned against knife crime and set up a youth club in his memory. The school has engaged with investigations into the tragedy.
