A teenager was needlessly killed while attempting to act as a peacemaker during a drunken brawl in a Derbyshire market place, a court has heard. Liam Derrett, aged 19, stepped in to stop a fight in Ilkeston Market Place in June last year, only to be punched multiple times by two men, leading to his tragic death two days later.
Fatal Intervention in Market Place Altercation
Derby Crown Court was told that Liam Derrett, from Kirk Hallam, was first struck twice by Kai Donachie and then once by Joshua Harris when he tried to break up the altercation. The second blow caused the teenager to fall, hitting his head on the ground and rendering him unconscious. He was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries after suffering a fractured skull and a brain bleed.
Judge Condemns "Drunken Yobbish Violence"
In sentencing the pair, Judge Shaun Smith KC described the incident as "a drunken brawl, drunken yobbish violence in the early hours of the morning in a market place." He emphasised that such behaviour is widely condemned, stating, "People are sick of it, particularly in that market place and up and down the country, and 99 per cent of the time they don't end in the way this did."
The judge unequivocally confirmed Liam's innocent role, noting, "He was incontrovertibly acting as a peacemaker at all times. He was completely innocent of anything that evening." This characterisation aligns with heartfelt tributes from Liam's family, who in a victim impact statement remembered him as "cheeky, lively and funny" and someone "who saw the good in everyone."
Community Impact and Legal Proceedings
The case has highlighted ongoing concerns about public safety and alcohol-fuelled violence in communal areas like market places. The sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of such altercations, even when individuals like Liam intervene with peaceful intentions.
Local authorities and community leaders may now face increased pressure to address these issues, ensuring that public spaces remain safe for all residents. The tragic loss of a young life under these circumstances underscores the urgent need for preventive measures and greater public awareness.
