An 18-year-old kayaker has died after a freak lightning strike hurled him into a Florida river. Michael Aidan Vargas was kayaking with his father on the Blackwater River in Santa Rosa County, approximately 170 miles west of Tallahassee, on Sunday when the incident occurred.
Details of the Incident
According to reports, Vargas was struck by lightning and fell from his kayak. His father and employees from the Navy's Morale, Welfare, and Recreation program witnessed the event and immediately launched a search. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was notified at 12.25pm and took over the search efforts.
Multiple agencies, including dive teams, participated in the operation until Vargas's body was recovered. The FWC has stated that the incident remains under investigation.
Family's Response
Vargas's sister, Marissa Vargas, told the Daily Mail that the cause of death has not yet been determined. She described her brother as always happy, loving his life, his family, and his friends deeply. 'He would want everyone to be happy just like he always was,' she said.
Marissa also requested that any support or donations be directed to Daphne Search and Rescue. In a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, she wrote: 'Rest in peace, my guardian angel. You were too pure for this world. I’m so grateful to experience the time I had with you. You will always be so loved and missed by everyone you met. I will always honor you and your life.'

Friends and loved ones of Vargas shared messages on social media expressing their grief. One user wrote: 'Aiden will continue to teach anyone who knew him kindness and compassion, there are no words, I am so incredibly sorry.'
