Caitlyn Whitley, 19, made the devastating discovery of her father Paul John Whitley's lifeless body inside his tent at Download Festival on June 11. The 50-year-old galvaniser from Sittingbourne, Kent, had been camping with his daughter at the renowned heavy metal music festival.
Upon waking at around 9am, Caitlyn called out "good morning" to her father in the adjacent tent. When she received no reply, she assumed he was sleeping in. However, when she went to rouse him at approximately 10:30am, she was met with a heartbreaking find.
Entering his tent, she discovered him motionless on the ground, positioned as if he was trying to crawl out. Caitlyn frantically rang her mother Emmilou Firshman, 49, who hurried over with stepdad Scott to help retrieve Paul from the tent.
Family's Harrowing Discovery
Emmilou recounted the harrowing moment she entered the tent: "I could see that he was in a weird position. I wiggled him, and he wasn't moving at all. I put my hand on his back, and he was freezing, and I knew something really bad was happening, so I ran to go and get somebody."
A volunteer who was a nurse heard the commotion and came running. Caitlyn was hysterical, screaming and hyperventilating as her mother described seeing her heart break. Emergency services arrived and erected a large black gazebo to protect the family's privacy.
Investigation and Cause of Death
The circumstances surrounding Paul's death remain unclear, though Leicestershire Police are not treating it as suspicious. The coroner informed Caitlyn that confirming the official cause of death could take up to 15 weeks. Caitlyn is adamant it was not drug-related, stating: "My dad doesn't drink, he sipped my cider, he had a coffee and a cigarette before bed and fell asleep."
Paul had been excited for his first camping experience at a festival, having only ever attended one-day local events. He was a massive metal fan, most looking forward to seeing Limp Bizkit and Hollywood Undead at Download. Caitlyn recalled: "When I was younger, I used to cry getting my nappy changed, and he would sing a Slipknot song to me to calm me down."
Tributes and Aftermath
Caitlyn described her father as a "proper dad joker, always telling silly dad jokes" who would do anything for her. Emmilou and Paul separated more than ten years ago but maintained a strong friendship and co-parented Caitlyn together. Emmilou said: "He was my ex-husband, but we still had a really good relationship and it was all for Caitlyn because she is amazing and is the centre of everything."
Both Caitlyn and Emmilou commended Download Festival's handling of the situation. Emmilou praised James Dean, in charge of the TLC team, saying: "He looked after us and gave us everything we needed before I even knew what I needed."
The family have set up a GoFundMe to support Caitlyn with the cost of the funeral. Father's Day was particularly difficult for Caitlyn, who said: "Every time I closed my eyes I kept seeing him in his tent."
