A 15-year-old boy has died after a tree fell on him during a hike at YMCA Camp Widjiwagan near Nashville, Tennessee. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department classified the death as accidental.
Incident Details
The incident occurred on July 27 when two camp counselors were leading a group of campers on a trail. They encountered a tree that had fallen and was leaning against another tree above the path. The counselors warned the campers not to touch the tree as they walked under it, according to police.
Investigators were told that as the victim, Camden Robert Callihan, and a friend walked under the tree, the friend touched it in a pull-up motion, causing it to fall on Callihan. The two counselors and other campers lifted the tree off the victim, and camp staff administered emergency care.
Aftermath
Callihan was rushed by ambulance to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he died shortly after arrival. Police stated: "Today's death of a 15-year-old who was fatally injured while on a trail at Camp Widjiwagan is classified as accidental." The YMCA camp has not yet responded to requests for comment.
