A 15-year-old girl and a 30-year-old woman have been arrested after a car drove the wrong way down the M1 before crashing into another vehicle. The collision took place near Wakefield on Friday night, leaving a man hospitalised and forcing the closure of the northbound carriageway.
Details of the Incident
West Yorkshire Police said a blue Kia Proceed had failed to stop for officers while driving the wrong way up the M1 on the northbound carriageway. The driver of the Dacia, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital with potentially life-changing injuries.
Emergency crews swarmed the area following the horror smash, which led to the closure of the northbound carriageway. National Highways confirmed in an update on Saturday morning that the M1 had fully reopened in both directions.
Arrests and Appeal
Three people – including an 18-year-old man, a 15-year-old girl and a 30-year-old woman – have been arrested on suspicion of causing injury by reckless driving. The woman was also arrested on suspicion of being over the prescribed limit. Another person allegedly fled the scene.
Police are now appealing to anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward.
