A man killed in a brazen shooting in Sydney that left five others injured has been identified as Alai Ahio, 28. The incident, which police have labelled an 'underworld attack', occurred on Tuesday night, May 19, in Canley Heights.
Details of the Incident
Ahio, a former associate of Sydney-based rap group OneFour, was sitting in a garage of a home when gunfire erupted. Police were alerted to the shooting just before 8.20pm. At 8.30pm, two men, including Ahio and a 32-year-old, arrived at Liverpool Hospital with multiple wounds. Ahio underwent surgery but later died. The 32-year-old remains in serious condition with a neck injury.
Around 10 minutes later, two men aged 23 and 22 presented at Fairfield Hospital in serious condition. They were transferred to other hospitals; the 23-year-old is being treated for a gunshot wound to his neck, and the 22-year-old for a shoulder injury. Roughly an hour later, a 19-year-old man arrived at Liverpool Hospital with arm injuries and is in stable condition.
Police Investigation
Detective Superintendent Craig Middleton stated that police believe two other men entered the Canley Vale home, and gunfire erupted shortly after. The suspects are thought to have fled in a white SUV. All victims were known to each other. Police are investigating links to the underworld, particularly a group known as the 'coconut cartel', though no direct connections have been confirmed.
A crime scene has been established at the Canley Heights home, and a second at a Saint Johns Park address where two cars used to transport the first four men were found. Middleton described the attack as 'very brazen and violent' and confirmed that police are taking measures to prevent further incidents.
