A 41-year-old Victorian man has been charged after a police firearm was unintentionally discharged during his arrest at Sydney Airport's T2 domestic terminal on Wednesday morning.
Australian Federal Police (AFP) acting commander Scott Raven said officers approached the man shortly after 6am following reports of suspicious behaviour at a check-in counter. The man allegedly became verbally and physically aggressive, and during the arrest, an AFP short-barrelled rifle was accidentally fired.
The bullet lodged in an oven in a cafe approximately one metre from where the gun was discharged. No injuries were reported. Raven confirmed the circumstances of the discharge are under internal investigation.
The man was charged with obstructing a commonwealth official and creating a disturbance at an airport. He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on 1 September.
An airport spokesperson stated there was no lockdown and operations continued normally after the incident was resolved. The AFP established a crime scene but confirmed there was no ongoing threat to the public.
