A man was arrested at Sydney Airport's domestic terminal on Tuesday after a police firearm was discharged during an altercation near a cafe. The incident occurred around 6am at gate 49 of the T2 terminal, leading to a partial lockdown.
Australian Federal Police confirmed that an investigation has been launched, but stressed there is no ongoing threat to the public. The airport is now operating normally, and no injuries were reported.
According to eyewitness William, a former New South Wales police officer, he saw two officers struggling with a man when an officer's long firearm fell to the ground. 'The shot has been discharged,' he told 2GB radio. Another witness told ABC News he saw 'people running' as the gun went off, with the bullet appearing to hit a cafe wall.
The suspect, who has not been publicly identified, allegedly attempted to snatch an officer's gun during the struggle. He has been arrested but charges have not yet been pressed, according to 1News. Police stated that further comment will be provided at an appropriate time.
