A number of road closures have been announced for Swansea ahead of Bonnie Tyler's funeral as Wales gets ready to say goodbye to the iconic star. A number of events are being held in and around Swansea where fans will be able to pay their respects to the Total Eclipse of the Heart singer, with the funeral due to take place on Monday, August 17. Tyler, who was born Gaynor Hopkins, died in a Portuguese hospital on July 8 at the age of 75.
Saturday procession and road closures
Following her passing, tributes and condolences poured in for the Welsh singer, and fans have been invited to line the streets to pay their respects as Tyler's coffin makes its way through Mumbles to her home on Saturday, August 15. Swansea council has announced a number of road closures and details to ensure the events can go ahead safely.
Tyler is currently resting at William Pressdee Funeralcare in Mumbles and will return to her home in Llwynderw on Saturday. The hearse will depart at approximately 3.15pm, travelling along Newton Road before continuing onto Mumbles Road. Those wishing to pay their respects are invited to line Newton Road. To allow people to do so safely, Newton Road will be closed from the junction with Mumbles Road, near the White Rose, to Langland Road, near Oystermouth School, from approximately 3pm on Saturday.
Buses will be permitted to travel through the closure for as long as it remains safe to do so and the road will reopen as soon as possible after the cortege has passed.
Monday funeral service and final journey
A celebration of Tyler's life will take place at Swansea Minster (St Mary's Church) on Monday, at around noon. Road closures will be in place from early in the morning for this service. Local councillors say St Mary's Square/Whitewalls and St Mary Street will be closed from 7am to around 3pm. Access to the city centre core pedestrianised area is expected to remain available until approximately 10.30am, subject to safety considerations.
Entry to the church will be for family, friends and invited guests only. For members of the public wishing to pay their respects, the service will be shown on a large screen in nearby St David's Square. It will also be streamed online here. The service is expected to last approximately one hour.
Following the service, the singer will make a final journey through her hometown of Skewen at approximately 1.20pm before a strictly private family committal and farewell service. The route from Swansea will be along Fabian Way to Ashleigh Terrace (through Jersey Marine), Pen Y Heol, Burrows Road, Hen Hoel, New Road, Sidling Terrace, Park Avenue and Peniel Green Road.
