Bomb disposal experts have been called in after a suspected explosive device was found on German train tracks near Treuchtlingen railway station in Bavaria. The area has been cordoned off and nearby buildings have been evacuated as a precaution.
Police urge public to avoid station
Police have urged the public to avoid Treuchtlingen railway station while they inspect the suspicious device. In a post on X, police said: "Currently, as a precautionary measure, some directly affected buildings are being evacuated by emergency response teams. The suspicion that it is a potentially explosive device has not yet been ruled out."
Train services suspended
Train services through the town, around 90 miles northwest of Munich, have been suspended while the object is lifted for inspection and X-ray images are analysed.
Recent drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport
This latest alarm comes days after an explosive-laden drone was found close to a Ukrainian cargo plane at Leipzig/Halle Airport, forcing the closure of its runways. Bomb disposal experts found a mass identified as explosive material containing a detonator, but the explosive was defective and did not go off, according to Bild.
Four Ukrainian aircraft were reported to be in the immediate vicinity of the drone bomb. Germany's Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, said the drone's explosive cargo pointed towards a failed attack potentially from "foreign powers". There have been several unauthorised drone flights at sites across Germany in recent weeks, including military installations, seaports, logistics hubs and energy infrastructure, with airports on high alert.
