Two employees of San Francisco's Condor Club topless bar have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of the establishment's owner, Mark Calcagni, 60. Richard Lund, 43, and Asia Morton, 25, who are reportedly in a romantic relationship and live together, were taken into custody on Friday, according to the San Francisco Standard.
Lund is alleged to have shot and killed Calcagni near his home in the early hours of October 3. Morton is accused of assisting in planning the attack, police said. The Santa Rosa Police Department's Violent Crime Investigations unit arrested Lund at the couple's apartment in Dublin, while Morton was detained at San Francisco International Airport upon returning from international travel.
Police identified the suspects through witness interviews, surveillance footage, and other digital evidence, according to a department statement. Both Lund and Morton are being held at Sonoma County Jail without bail.
The Condor Club, which opened in 1958, gained notoriety in 1964 when waitress Carol Doda danced topless and was arrested. Her subsequent acquittal helped legalise topless bars and strip clubs in the United States, according to CBS News. Calcagni also managed Vanity San Francisco, a strip club located a block away.
In a social media post earlier in October, representatives for both clubs expressed deep sadness over the loss, describing Calcagni as "the heart and soul of Condor Club and a cherished figure in the North Beach community." A subsequent statement pledged to "honor his legacy" and noted that his "dedication, leadership and passion over many years shaped who we are today."
