Houses were evacuated and roads were cordoned off in Southport today (Saturday, September 26) after a suspected explosive device was found at the back of a house. Emergency services responded to reports of suspected ordnance on Kew Road, with Merseyside Police alerted around 12.30pm.
Cordon in place between Brighton Road and Bedford Road
The road was closed between Brighton Road and Bedford Road, as well as Dinorwic Road, while the item was assessed. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and North West Ambulance Service also attended the scene. Photographs taken by residents showed around 16 houses within a police cordon, with multiple emergency service vehicles and staff present.
Device declared non-viable and incident stood down
A spokesperson for Merseyside Police confirmed to the ECHO that nobody was injured and the device was “non-viable”. The incident has since been stood down. Residents have been allowed back into their homes and the roads have been reopened.
