Sky News was forced to end its live morning broadcast from Middlesbrough on Friday, August 28, after a member of the public repeatedly interrupted a correspondent's update on the ongoing investigation into violence in the area. The interruption came as the news segment was reporting on the latest developments, with more than 200 extra police officers drafted in to support Cleveland Police following a string of violent incidents.
Interruption during live report
During the Friday morning news bulletin, the host threw the show over to broadcaster Shingi Mararike, who reported live from Middlesbrough to share the latest update on the ongoing violence. Moments after he began his report, a member of the public jumped into frame and repeatedly interrupted his segment by shouting over him, saying: "The police killed them" and branding officers "rats".
The broadcast was subsequently pulled off air, with the segment coming to an abrupt end live on the scene.
Recent incidents in Middlesbrough
The report came amid a series of violent events in the area over the past week. Police were involved in a head-on crash which killed two officers and five young men, and a fatal house fire. Investigations were continuing after a woman and a seven-year-old girl died in the blaze in Grangetown, near Middlesbrough, on Wednesday, August 26, which was only a mile away from the scene of Saturday's deadly collision on the A66.
In the early hours of Thursday morning, a vehicle crashed into a wall outside a house in Steele Crescent, South Bank, minutes away from the other two scenes. Just hours later, a man was receiving treatment after being stabbed in Eston, about two miles away from the A66 crash.
